Hi,

I know this is a bit off topic but I've always found this group extremely
knowledgeable and willing to help so I thought I would try here first.

I am looking for distro suggestions. A friend has an prehistoric laptop and
is geeking out over the idea of actually breathing new life into it.
Personally, I think we should show proper respect for the dead and bury it
in some dumpster but what the heck... maybe I might learn something in the
process.

It's a Compaq Presario 1244, AMD-K6 300MHz? (All I see online is K6-2 366MHz
but that's what he said), 32 MB RAM, 2 GB Hard disk. Yep, it's TOTALLY
fossilized. Is there a modern mini Linux distro capable of running on this?
If so, what about the necessities like word processor, web browser, e-mail
client and possibly media player? Oh yeah, and it would also need some sort
of usable GUI. When even cell phones sport more power than this these days,
I realize this is probably a very tall order.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Dave

Elive would work quite well. I've installed it on a P166 with 64MB and it
runs quite well. I would see about adding a little ram though.
Elive is a Live CD with an install to hard drive button - it uses
enlightenment for the desktop and comes with most of the software you've
mentioned.
