If you run KDE or GNOME, just oplug the device in. That should do it.
Otherwise do the following: open a terminal, maximize that terminal and
become root.

Then type `tail -f /var/log/messages` wait a minute and then plug in the
USB device and see what is happening. Copy and paste that info here.

Sometimes you need to wait a few minutes (max 5) when you use it the
first time.

Also some extra info on the USB device might be interesting.
