Hello all,
I have tried setting up my SuSE 10.1 box to be a router but apparently
without luck.
Anyone who can tell where I've setup the router wrong?
Not with the confusing info you gave. I reread it several times and I am
confused what your setup is.

Yes, you are right. I try to be brief and precise but sometimes I'm just
too brief. So I'll give it another try:
The box set up to be a router looks like this:
router
WAN +----------------------------------+ LAN
| |
| eth0 eth1 |
------------------ -----------------
| automatic 192.168.100.2 | client
<------- | address setup | machine
the Internet | via DHCP |
+----------------------------------+
The WAN only has one name server address which is 192.168.1.1 (which is
why I choose to give my own LAN addresses in the area of 192.168.100.*).
And the gateway address of eth0 is also 192.168.1.1:
cmj@workstation:~> /sbin/route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask ... Iface
....
0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 ... eth0
So I have set 'Default Gateway' to 192.168.1.1 and checked 'Enable IP
Forwarding' in YaST's Routing Configuration.
DHCP Server setup:
In YaST's DHCP Server Setup I have marked the card with the address
192.168.100.2 to be active and checked to open the firewall for it.
Then I have set the 'Primary Name Server IP' to 192.168.0.1 and the
'Default Gateway' to 192.168.100.2, and the 'First IP Address' and the
'Last IP Address' is set to 192.168.100.100 and 192.168.100.250
respectively.
Finally:
Of cause I have restarted the network on the router and the client
machine after woods and I have set up the firewall configuration and
even tried with the firewall stopped.
But:
It seems that the DHCP server doesn't do the job why the client machine
gives this answer:
client: # /etc/init.d/network restart
Shutting down network interfaces:
....
eth0 (DHCP) . . . . no IP address yet... backgrounding. waiting
....
I hope I have managed to give sufficient information in a non-confusing
way this time.
Thanks,
Chris
