Hello again,
Problem remains. is there a way to configure dhcp manually from the
shell.
All tutorials on DHCP on the net lead to this link
http://linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/894/1/
and I did exactly as they said, but nothing. I also manually entered
the gateway in YAST, and i removed eth1 like u said. zilch! nothing,
and ifconfig only gives the loopback address (no inet).
Is there something in inittab, or any configuration files?

I tried everything with yast, didnt work.
My specs:
Network Card: IBM Ethernet Controler (Yast detects it on eth0 and
eth1)
This isn't right. If you have only one NIC, you shouldn't have eth0 and
eth1. You should just have eth0.
ipconfig on windows gives:
Connection Specific DNS Suffix: hall1.student-halls.lon.ac.uk
IP Address : 128.86.158.208
Subnet mask: 255.255.254.0
Default Gateway: 128.86.158.1
When you say you "tried everything" in YaST, does that mean you manually
entered the above gateway and used the gateway for DNS?
If you really only have one NIC, go into YaST and remove eth1. Since I
don't have SUSE Ent. 8 (10.1 here) I don't know if YaST is the same in
it as in the non-enterprise versions. You'll have to look. The
equivalent of ipconfig in Linux is ifconfig.
You should also check your firewall settings if you have one.
