and I did exactly as they said, but nothing. I also manually entered
the gateway in YAST, and i removed eth1 like u said. zilch! nothing,
and ifconfig only gives the loopback address (no inet).

Is there something in inittab, or any configuration files?

I read through your posts again and I don't see where you mentioned
exactly what NIC you have. Perhaps the drivers aren't being loaded or
perhaps the wrong drivers are? What is your hardware?
