Thanks for this comment!! I had been having lots of problems with system lockups when using USB storage devices and your comment above made me check my ACPI settings (some of which turned out to be disabled!). All appears to be working fine now with ACPI fully enabled so I can verify that David is 100% correct.... make sure ACPI is enabled on 64-bit installs or you will have problems!
