Suse doesnt seem to like widescreen

Hi - I have a new Dell 2007FPW widescreen monitor, with a native resolution
of 1680x1050. My difficulty is that when I try to run Suse 10.0 or 10.1 at
this resolution (or any of the other wide screen formats I have tried) the
screen doesnt fit the desktop any more. At 1680x1050 it looks nice enough
(the font could be clearer) but the top of the screen disappears. If I have,
say, firefox open, then enough of the screen is hidden that I cant see the
bar at the top of Firefox - the first I can see is 'file, edit, etc', the
menu headers.
I have ended up running the resolution at 1280x1024 - at this res the fonts
are very clear and neat, and the screen fits perfectly. So I more or less
have a working solution, but it bothers me that I cant do it the obvious
way. I upgraded to suse 10.1 to see if that helped, and I now have a
'driver' for the monitor, but that still doesn't help. I installed the
nvidia driver, but with exactly the same outcome.
Under windows, everything looks lovely - although I have to admit that was
tested using a different computer..
The hardware is a Shuttle nForce 2 motherboard with integrated 'geforce 4
mx' graphics, using 16 meg of ram, with a 1 gig of ram installed. All of
this has been using the VGA output, as there is no DVI with the on board
graphics and I havent gotten to the point of installing a card to test it
with.
When I search online I dont find any useful answers, so I thought I would
try posting here to see if anyone else has encountered the same issue?
Bruce
