Re: Upgrading to 10.1 from 10.0 (IA32)

If the update f*cks up, you just go back, or? Unless the OP forgets
to back up the previous installation, there's no danger with messing around.

Well, I have no idea wether or not the PC is mission critical. If he is
out for a week, he can't do anything with it, it could be that he misses
an importand email.

And 'just going back' will most likely include a new installation. And
to do that correctly could take some time as well.

OTOH it could go extremely smooth and that will be most likely the case,
but is it woth the risk. WHY does the OP want to upgrade? Unfortunatly
90% of the time people upgrade because there is a higher version number
available.

That is how they got trained to behave under Windows. New version was
needed, because otherwise it won't work. Also people have been trained
to behave like that with advertisements "New and improved" to such a
state that they think that new means improved. It doesn't.

There is a reason that SLES and SLED have 5 years of support and most
companies have found out (the hard way) that installing something and
then leave it alone for 5 years is the best and cheapest way to do
things. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The excuse 'if it doesn't work, go back' does not answer the question
why the OP want to update his system from 10.0 to 10.1. That is the
first question one needs to answer: why. And we can not answer that for
him.

Whenever I asked people the question why they want to upgrade, I get
blank stares. As if it were forbidden to upgrade. When I keep asking and
them to explain it to me, they do not know and just upgrade as if they
were Pavlovian dogs. "A new version is out, ring!"

So the question I ask if somebody want to upgrade is "why" and agin, not
for myself, but as a question the person who want to do the upgrade
should think about in earnest. I couldn't care less if somebody upgrades
or not. They can upgrade each and every day if they which to, as long as
they are, for themselves, aware as to why.
