re: Postscript ripping
If we will let this go on on a windows rip platform for a couple of
days, the disks will be so fragmented that the process not only slows
down too much for production, but also kills the computer totally. The
latter phenomenon is more due to the windows system also getting
fragmented (memory).

Excellent points; I'd not considered heavy-duty industrial usage like
this, and Windows' memory fragmentation is also an important aspect of the
whole phenomenon.

For these reasons we used to (I'm outa there now for some time) format
the ripping disks on daily (nightly) basis and boot the machines.

Heh. Shortest route to defragmentation. ;)

re: shovelling a mixture of files around a FAT32 filesystem
Let this script run for a few days.

You will notice that the copying/moving times will slow down on big
files. If this will have any relevance in your daily computing depends
on what you do.

Yep, this is true. I'd been thinking about it mostly from a "how fast to
load this file" viewpoint but of course, the fragmentation would impact on
all aspects of filesystem access and not just streaming off file data.

Let this script go on for half a year and my guess is your machine will
be tits up. We're talking windows here.

Yes indeed. Very pleased I rarely have reason to use Windows - and even
then it's low-powered wrt disk usage.
