I have a camera that makes avi movies. These movies play fine in SUSE 10.0,

an mpeg file. I looked at kino, but it won't open or insert anything I
throw at it.
Before going to the trouble to re-encode the movie (which really should
only be necessary if you want to play it using a standalone DVD player),
perhaps you should check whether you have all the necessary Windows
codecs to play the avi on your XPensive operating systems.
While in Windows, download this little free utility called Gspot:
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
Then use it to open your avi file. It will tell you everything you need
to know to play it - i.e. what video and audio codecs you need etc.
Then do a Google search for those codecs, install them and you should be
able to play your avi in Windows Media Player.
Alternatively download the free vlc player (Windows version) here:
http://www.videolan.org
It generally can play most avi files without any need for external
codecs, and is a lot better & more stable player than WMP.
This is a good example of open source tools like ffmpeg being able to
play such files in Linux without any need to chase further software -
which you often have to do in Windows.
