Hardware problem PCMCIA ethernet module

My situation : Main PC with dual boot SLED10 and WinXP connected via a local Netgear 10T ethernet hub .
Ethernet hub is connected to a remote Wireless router with 4 Ethernet ports System is working well.
In same room as main PC and the Ethernet hub is a P3-866MHz laptop (AD 2001) The laptop has no native ethernet port hence a PCMCIA ethernet card make Gigabit capable of 10 -100 -1000 Mbits/sec is used
When this card is directly connected to the remote router it works well ,visible through 2 LEDs on the card 1 labelled 'Link/ACT' the other LED labelled 'Speed'
However when the card is connected via the ehternet hub ,only the 'Link/ACT' LED is on but NOT the LED labelled 'Speed' with the consequence that no Internet connection can be made.
The laptop runs Mandriva 2005 LE only .
When connected to the hub and going through the start-up cyclus (verbose) info shows that when eth0 is to be brought up :
- determining IP information for eth0 failed -
Again , when PCMCIA card is directly connected to the router there is no problem.
Question : Is the above a config problem associated with the Ethernet hub and if so howto overcome.
If the laptop can't work via the ethernet hub ,I'll have to crawl under the (bungalow) floor to run another cat 5 cable between router and the room where the laptop is located ,which would be rather tedious.
An alternative would be using a 'wireless adaptor', but signal strength might not be adequate due to plasterboard with aluminium back foil between router and then WiFi enabled laptop.
Any advice will be much appreciated.
Hope the above subject is not OT for this NG
