I installed SUSE Linux 10.1 (64 Bit) on my system (see below) and it
installs fine (as far as I can tell) but when the system reboots for the
first time after completing the installation, (it reboots like it should
do for the machine to complete the install) and after I select SUSE Linux
via grub boot loader the system freezes monitor stays black, but on and no
computer access to the hard drive nor to the dvd drive. If I try to press
caps lock or number lock, the lights stay they way they were (if they were
on, they stay on)

I am really confused as to why I cannot get the system to get past that
point. If I try to load failsafe mode, it goes through the screen where
you can see devices being probed, etc but then it gets to a point where I
get the dollar sign prompt, where I cannot do anything. I tried to type
in at the $"dmesg" but it says command not found...

I take it, that in fail safe mode you got a login prompt.
At that stage log in as root.
Then you need to issue the command 'sax2'
Your problem is that your graphics card or your monitor are not set
correctly. Sax2 allows you to get it right. Read your monitor specs and
ensure your card is correctly identified.
Later you may want to get 3D accelerated drivers from nvidia.com.

I am not a total newbie, I have been able to install other versions of
linux on systems, just not this one with SUSE 10.1 64 bit edition.
