Why not tell what to do
I made these a while ago, so off the top of my head would not be totally
correct. I'm going to make another, so I'll do a step by step as I make
it, as a sort of how-to. If you'd really like to try it, I'll post that,
and then answer questions if you get stuck on any part.
Something else came to mind also. If, after filling a container volume, one
burns it to a DVD, the existing container can be emptied, and reused. The
name can be changed, if desired, without any problems, and if the DVD copy
is again copied to the partition, for editing, both will have the same
passwords, for ease of use, while the change of name will allow them to
exist, side by side, if desired.
Choose the third option to do this as a user, rather than root.
That was absolutely unclear and now that I know it, I am glad I did not
changed my hardwareconfiguration.
You can change it back as soon as truecrypt has the random data.
I do not doubt its usability, I doubt its ease of use.
Once made, mounting is:
$ truecrypt /location/of/file /mountpoint
Enter password for '/location/of/file': ******** <Enter>
$ cd /mountpoint
Create directories, files etc. as any other mounted file system. To close
and unmount;
$ cd /anywhere/else
$ truecrypt -d /mountpoint <Enter>
if you have more than one volume in use. To close and unmount all
truecrypt volumes at once;
$ truecrypt -d <Enter>
Note: all of this is done as the user, not root. You can use a fixed
"mountpoint" directory, or use any existing directory as a mountpoint.
The only thing I've changed, is to add, "alias tc='truecrypt'" to my
~/.alias file. I'm lazy. ;)
You are aware that you are using an existing program name, are you?
Nooooo, but I do now. What, pray tell, is tc, normally. I'll add a letter,
or even two, to my alias. OK, I changed it to tcp, and checked first to
see if bash thought that was used for anything else. Bash does not
recognize tc as a command, neither as ordinary user, nor root. Are you
funning me, boy??
If I can do truecrypt, you can certainly do truecrypt.
I did and it didn't work. The think I hate most is that I need to select
a fixed amount of space. That is wasted space.
Until you fill a partition, do you consider it wasted space? It's choice
man. Beautiful Linux lovers choice. Pick a number. As this is practice,
use a DVD sized container, or smaller, in case you want to burn it off,
for testing purposes. Store normal data, sensitive data, porn, whatever in
it. It's just another mounted volume, when in use. Unmounted, it's
security. If you don't really have a need for an encrypted volume, empty
it, and remove it, after you're done playing with it. You'll know how to
make another, if you do need one later.
I have grand-kids that use this machine. What's appropriate to d/l to show
my son and daughter-in-law (both 30)is not necessarily what I want the
grand-kids (9 and 10) finding, and asking about. This is safe temporary
storage that I can download directly into, and empty for reuse later. It's
like a virtual locked file cabinet, just as useful, and I have the only
key.
Next it wants me to do all sorts of stuff as root. I don't like to see
things like 'root' in whatever pops up.
I honestly don't remember having to be root for any of this. It's
possible, and I'll check that out, but I don't think so, except for
the (chmod o+r /dev/input/mice). I know I made these containers on SUSE
10.0, and installed trucrypt again, when I did a clean install of 10.1,
then just started using the already made containers.
As for writing makeSUSEdvd, I gather, I manage, I don't do that much
writing. :-)
I am by no means a programmer or a scripter. I am perhaps merely an
advanced user, but nothing more then that.
Don't be getting modest on me now. You da MAN. You done be mah HEEROO. ;-D
Don't disillusion me. It's rude!
