The URL you suggest takes me to a page with the above...nice BUT in
any and everything on my system which has the word "desktop" in it,
there's no menu or anything which has the letters GDM or the word Gnome

Did you go into :
YAST
System
/etc/sysconfig Editor
Desktop
Display Manager
Display Manager (Change to GDM, I believe you an type that in as well.. But I may be wrong there..)
Then back one level
to:Window Manager
Default_WM (Change to GNOME, again I think you can type it in if it is not already present)
