Well since Novell claims Opensuse is the the same there must be some
downsides vs Suse. But it's always wise evelauate both sides.

Good start is to differentiate betwen few flavors.

For the software developed by openSUSE project ( http://opensuse.org ) is
important to know that the name was changed between version 10.1 and 10.2,
so the openSUSE 10.2 is the same branch as SUSE Linux 10.1 and 10.0.

You can buy it and you will have included some proprietary software, like
Acrobat Reader, Real Player 10 and few more, and 90 days free installation
support. See:
http://www.novell.com/products/opensuse/
http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux101/

For download version instructions are on above openSUSE project web page.

The other branch is software for companies.
SLED 10 (SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop) is desktop oriented distribution.
SLES 10 (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server) is server oriented distribution.
The base is the same as SUSE Linux 10.1, but it contains proprietary add on
packages aimed at professional users and large companies that need
different kind of support than home and small office users. See:
