Unless there is an external reason, this indicates a serious hardware
problem. Get http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and any other diagnostic
tool you can get.
I booted from a SuSE mini CD into rescue mode and was able to
mount /dev/hda5 and see the boot and grub directories. I even ran the grup
install which seemed to run OK. Thinking all was ok I then rebooted and got
the same error message.
So, I am asking the "seasoned" SuSE guru's... How can I restore my
"bootability" on this drive?
My gut feeling tells me to put the drive into another machine and first
make a backup. Then you can start looking for the hardware problem. At
least you will have your data save.
My guess is that the HD is slightly damaged during transportation.
After backup (DO THE BACKUP ON ANOTHER MACHINE) you should boot the
machine with the mini CD and with YaST do a small change in grub, like
adding a space after the name of what you want to boot and removing that
space again. Or run grub-install with the apropriate parameters if you
know how to read a man page. (Please do read the manpage or use the YaST
way)
Then you can start looking for the real cause, being it the HD that is
going down or the mobo or CPU or PSU or whatever.

They say pesticides have been linked to low sperm counts.
In my opinion if you have bugs down there that are so bad
you need to use a pesticide, you're not gonna get laid anyway.
