Before I give up & go for a Windows-only PC or even a Mac, does anyone
know of PCs that will run SuSE 10.1 or openSuSE 10.2?

I'm running openSUSE 10.2 on a new computer. I just put together a Core 2
Duo with an Asus P5B Deluxe mobo. I used a SATA DVD drive because I had
heard about the difficulties with the JMicron PATA controller. It
installed fine. After the initial install, I added a PATA DVD-RW drive and
it also worked fine. The BIOS is set to AHCI mode for the on-board JMicron
PATA controller.

I have both NICs working as well. (The one NIC says it's an Asustek
Marvell 88E8001 and is using the skge driver. The second NIC just says
it's an AsusTek and it's using the sky2 driver.) I seem to recall having a
little difficulty with the NICs at first, but I can't remember now. The
reason I can't remember is that I originally did an install of openSUSE
when I first assembled the computer. Then experimented with the
sk98lin drivers that people on the web were pointing to. I had success
with those, but when I re-installed (for real this time), I didn't install
any additional drivers.

I had read a lot of stuff on the Internet prior to building this system
because didn't want to get into any troubles during the installation. At
install, I set up a RAID0 (not hardware or fake-hw raid, but using Linux's
RAID) with two SATA drives. This is what is in the new system:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (BX80557E6300)
Asus P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP Intel P965 Express
Gigabyte GeForce 7600GS (GV-NX76G256D-RH)
2 GB Kingston RAM (KVR667D2N5K2)
2 WDC 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
(WD2500KS) LITE-ON DVD-R Combo Drive SATA (SHC-52S7K-05)
SAMSUNG DVD±RW IDE (SH-S182M/BEBN)
Other odds and ends (Zalman cooler, case, fans, etc.)

All of it was purchased from newegg.com during the month of December.

The only thing that I've been unable to do so far is to record from the
line-in on the soundcard. I can record from the microphone. I tried both
the on-board audio and a SB Live and I can't record from the line-in. I
can hear sound, but when I try to record it (with any of the apps,
including Audacity), I get nothing. I'm still trying to figure that out.
(My other Linux computers work just fine.) I even got the Xgl/Compiz stuff
to work out of the box. (It's pretty slick, but I don't think I'll use it
day-to-day.)

All-in-all, I couldn't be happier. After reading about a lot of the
problems people were having, I expected to have more trouble installing
openSUSE on the Asus mobo. I started migrating to Linux full-time last
August (except for my FPS games on Windows), and I'm getting closer. I
only use my XP machine for non-gaming maybe a couple hours a month now.
