If I run KDE System Guard I can see kio_file, kio_pop3 and kio_uiserver
(after failed connection) but not kio_smb (even when I switch off firewall
and establish the connection).

I don't think so, I can only see UDP packets with firewall switched on,
Here is the Wireshark trace of the connection failing with connection
failing. I have edited out the spanning tree packets.
192.168.0.1 is modem

It would appear that samba is not running on the device...???? as there
is no smb protocol, just ms browsing on port 137.

I have a couple of wireshark captures (screen snapshots) here of
opensuse 10.2 and sled 10 connecting to my smb device.
