HiI'm running a TDS net device similar to the buffalo and have never
had to turn the firewall off to access the smb server?
Its definitely the firewall, if I stop the firewall I can connect with no
problems, when the firewall is started attempts to connect get:
Error - KDesktop
Timeout on server
hd-hglan82c
If I run nmap on the TDS device it has tcp ports 139 and 445 open. I
have just tested it on a vanilla 10.2 vmware machine and it works fine,
I also use SLED 10 which runs fine and have also used with SuSE 10.
What is TDS? Is it TeX Directory Structure? anyway I cant run anything on
the Buffalo, I don't have a command line interface, I can only configure
it through the the http interface.
That
to me would indicate an issue with the path to the smb device or the smb
device itself. When you try to connect, does it ask for a
username/password.
No, when the firewall is stopped I can see the files immediately from
Konqueror.
Is kio_smb installed running? eg;
# lsof |grep kio_smb
No, when I type this I just get the prompt back:
martin@suse102:~> su root
Password:
suse102:/home/martin # lsof |grep kio_smb
suse102:/home/martin #
If I run KDE System Guard I can see kio_file, kio_pop3 and kio_uiserver
(after failed connection) but not kio_smb (even when I switch off firewall
and establish the connection).
Is there a tcp connection <youripaddress:anyport> ->
<smbserveripaddress:port 445>
I don't think so, I can only see UDP packets with firewall switched on,
Here is the Wireshark trace of the connection failing with connection
failing. I have edited out the spanning tree packets.
192.168.0.1 is modem
192.168.0.3 is computer where this trace is being run
192.168.0.4 is buffalo file server which I am trying to access

It would appear that samba is not running on the device...???? as there
is no smb protocol, just ms browsing on port 137.
I have a couple of wireshark captures (screen snapshots) here of
opensuse 10.2 and sled 10 connecting to my smb device.

The device I'm using is this;

It you run nmap from your computer to the device, what ports are open
on it?
e.g;
malcolml@oscar-vm-suse-10-2:~> nmap 192.168.10.50
Starting Nmap 4.20 ( http://insecure.org ) at 2007-01-02 23:25 CST
Interesting ports on 192.168.10.50:
Not shown: 1693 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
21/tcp open ftp
24/tcp open priv-mail
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
445/tcp open microsoft-ds
Nmap finished: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 7.691 seconds
