OK, here's my reason for wanting ext2:

I'm accustomed to using Symantec Ghost for partition-image backups.

My version of Ghost knows about ext2, but (trust me, I tried) messes up
restoring to ext3.

The difference between the two is the journal - and your version of Ghost
isn't handling that. It happens.

...so, it's ext2 to feel comfortable with backups.

There are hundreds of ways to do backups. My "on-site" backups are on
another (headless) server that essentially mirrors the data drives on
my workstations and other servers. My sister lives on the other end of
the country, and we act as off-site backup servers for each other, using
rsync to keep the servers up to date. The backups are encrypted, so
there is no security problem either in sending the data over the Internet,
or once it is on the remote backup server.

As you may have seen in another thread, I got my internet-access problem
solved. Turned out it was a problem with the "Tulip" driver for my
ethernet controller.

The so-called Tulip NIC has had problems like that over the ages. It's
a popular design, and has been cloned, and almost-cloned quite a few
times. The Ethernet-HOWTO has the following to say about the Davicom
card:

4.15.1. Davicom DM9102

Status: Supported, Driver Name: tulip, dmfe

This is an almost clone of the tulip chip and so you can use the tulip
driver or the vendor supplied dmfe driver. Usual advice is to try
tulip first, and then try dmfe. Apparently dmfe is only better for
very very old cards.

If you actually look at all the cards that are supposed to be tulip
drivers, you find that several may work better (or even just work)
with other drivers, such as the de4x5, dmfe, or tulip_old.
