I recently acquired a new laptop with windows on it. I want to

files/software in it. So if i image the hard disk now and then
format and create two partitions, is it possible for me to palce
the image on partition rather on the whole hard disk??
If you have access to Norton Ghost, this is easy.
First, make an image of the first partition. Delete it.
Then, reload the image, specifying a smaller size.
Afterwards, just run the Linux installer to use the free space.
More important to know why the problem in the first place!
The reason is that the machine most likely has a recovery partition
located at the end of the drive. This can cause the problems
installing Linux, or any other OS that tries to resize the hard
drive!
