I can no longer mount this HD - and i suspect its given its last gasp.
Can anyone shed a little more light on this. OS is suse linux 10.0 on a 686
machine.

I think you've got it. The drive has seek failures, possibly
because the disk surface can't be properly read or for some
reason related to that.

If you have no backup...

On the other hand check the disk manufacturer's web site.
They often have utilities that can check the disk in
detail. The download of the utility often can go onto
a floppy and be booted directly from the floppy.

If you have no floppy it might be bootable from a CD.
