trying to update 10.1 to 10.2 with the DVD ISO, the installer got stuck
trying to resolve some dependencies and package conflicts. mostly,
it complained about conflicts between java 1.4.2 and java 1.5. choosing
"do not install java 1.4.2" fixed the conflicts, but when trying to
"accept" and continue the installation, still keep getting an error window
to fix a dependency or package conflict - but it's empty! weird! doesn't
seem to be anything else to i can do but abort. i'm trying to avoid
letting it automatically trash everything that conflicts or is unsupported
because i have a bunch of unusual packages that are a hassle to re-install.
i've always upgraded systems just by backing up files and doing clean
installs, but it sounds like the 10.2 upgrade process is pretty reliable...?
I've not installed 10.2 yet but I have bought a brand new
hard drive for it. I'll make the new drive the master
drive and install on it.
If things go ok, it will be trivial to move files to the new
drive from the old and then put that drive on the shelf as
"backup".
And if things fail, it will be simple to go back to my old
disk.
Next weekend...
