I just got 10.2 up and running under VMWare 5.5.3 using XP Pro as a host.
Do it the other way around. More stable.
1. It seems that XGL isn't supported on VMWare as of yet - at least from
what I've read on the VMWare forums - has anyone had any success with this
or could you give me some pointers on some things to try to
perhaps get it to work?
XGL is 3D The virtual card ain't 3D.
2. Regarding the above question, does MS Virtual PC do a better job at
this?
Only if it has a virtual 3D card and I doubt that.
3. I've got another box dual booting with W2K and Ubuntu 6.10, but I"m
thinking of wiping that entirely and just loading 10.2 on it, but it's
only got an old ATI Rage Pro video card and 384 megs of RAM - will 10.2
suck on it and will XGL run at all?
10.1, no problem, XGL you could try. Nobody better then you can say if
you accept it or not. ;-)
4. At some point in this lifetime, I'd like to give Windoze the heave ho
once and for all, but I've got apps I just can't leave behind (proprietary
stuff like ham radio and other comm gear software/Zire apps/etc.) - are
the above options (and maybe MS Virtual Server) pretty much what I've got
as far as setting this with both OS's without doing the dual boot merry
go round?
Install Linux andf run VMware (or Parallels, like I do) on it. In there
you can run Wintendo for the few things you need, unless those are 3D
programs in which case you will need dualboot.
As you have two machines, use one for XP and the other for Linux. Then
use a switcher (or whatever they are called) to switch between those two
machines, which will leave you with one keyboard, one mouse and if the
hardware permits it two screens for both.
Yeah, I've got a KVM (Keyboard, Video, Monitor) switch running with it
now. A Raritan Switchman. Works great.
There are other options available.
Know of any?
5.Am I missing something or is the bottom line that some apps (like
Azureus/Java) won't be able to be installed with Yast2?
Yes, you need to add repo's
6. Is there a way to point Yast2 at multiple FTP sites, etc. to get
different lists of installable apps?
Yes. Just add repo's
Ok, a quick spin around google and it appears that Yast's default is
the YUM repository. Venturing a little further in Yast, would I be
correct to say that I need to add a new source in Yast under
"Installation Sources"?
If this is the case, then shouldn't I already have some kind of FTP
URL already configed there? The only "Installation Source" I see is a
pointer to my local installation cd's. Is this normal?
I also see SLP listed as a source. Is this a preferred method of
getting to repo's over FTP?
Thanks for your help.
