I have heard about people installing it with much less. Sounds to me
that the onboard video card was not recognised.

I am in the middle of a new 10.2 install on a system with onboard video
and 32M allocated to it. With 256M ram it refused to install unless it
had a swap partition. Adding another 256M worked.
