I am a Linux noob. It has been many years since I worked
much with command line - no real objection - just no need. I
have been looking at Linux for a long time. I have
sometimes installed a distro to find it was not yet up to
what I need to do. A few months back, I started getting
more serious about evaluating Linux as a path instead of
Windows whatever. I have d/l'd and run more than 30
different versions of Linux over the past 3 months with many
of them actually being installed into a machine. So far,
the only distro that has recognized and worked with my
Netgear wireless card right off the install is the Ubuntu
6.10. Other than that, it is not particularly exciting
since it scrambles the top left 1/4 of my screen at anything
other than max resolution. I must conclude it does not like
the ATI video card since other distro do not have this
characteristic. The Gnome desktop is not very exciting and
the NIC quits working if I install the KDE desktop for
Ubuntu which appears to make it Kubuntu. PCLinuxOS 2007
appears to recognize the NIC but does not actually work.
To get to the point, I like the KDE desktop much better than
the gnome for some reason - don't know exactly why. I have
installed the current OpenSUSE 10.2 and the Mandriva
versions. I find both installs work well but, I cannot get
the wireless working which is necessary to use the machine
with any real benefit. The SUSE recognizes the presence of
the card - the Mandriva does not. Both easily setup and use
the wired ethernet NIC The OpenSUSE 10.2 is currently
installed. I do not have a personal preference for one over
the other at this point - both appear to be perfectly
capable OS's if I can get the wireless working. W/O the
wireless, the system is useless to me. I have done a good
bit of research on what is needed to get the NIC working and
d/l'd the Madwifi and ndiswrapper files along with the
current drivers for the NIC in a Windows machine. I burned
the files to a CD which is readable with all of the windows
machines here but, for some reason, the Linux setup will not
recognize the CD in the drive so the files can be
transferred to be installed in the Linux box. The disc was
burned with Roxio's DragToDisc and the disc closed and,
supposed, made readable in all computers. Can Linux not
read these CD's? If not, how can I get the needed files
into the Linux box w/o a net connection? The machine is
currently in a dual boot config with WinXP. I can get the
files onto the Windows drive but, the SUSE does not appear
to recognize the existence of the Windows drive. I know the
answer to this must be simple but, I have just burned myself
out on it after several days of frustration with the
problem. The machine is in an inconvenient workshop
location to be tripping back and forth thru the weather and
running cable to the location is not feasible. I am not yet
married to any particular distro - just looking for some way
to make one or another work for a fair longterm evaluation
and potential adoption.

FWIW - I have found that wireless cards with the Atheros chip set work
very well 'out of the box' with several major Linux distros. I'm currently
using a Dlink WNA2330 on my kubuntu laptop.
