array limit problem developing with C in suse 10.2

Has there been any significant change in the C libraries going from
suse 10 to suse 10.2? I've just upgraded and am now getting a
segmentation fault when declaring arrays with more than 300,000 or so
entries. Exact number seems to be slightly sticky going each way, but
somewhere around 299,000.
gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux)
This code still works under my suse 10 installation.
Is this a bug or am I missing something?
