Finding fast Internet install repository?

I've done an Internet install of OpenSUSE 10.2 a few times now and one thing
that I seem to have bad luck at is choosing a install repository that is
reasonably fast (or even works).
I've checked out the mirrors on OpenSUSE.org. I usually write down the
install type (FTP, HTTP), IP and install path for three or four different
U.S. mirrors. Sometimes the installation gives a 404 error, indicating that
the necessary files are missing, so I try a different mirror. Eventually I
will connect to one that does work, but it's usually slow as molasses when
retrieving the catalogs.
I've got 7mbit down and 1mbit up (and see these speeds almost all the time)
so I'm sure I could do better.
Is there a way to find the fastest server, or is it just trial and error.
I'm located in Calgary, AB, Canada. Geographic locale usually bears little
on the speeds I see from the servers.
