Copy to HD puzzlement

I have manually done a cp of my home directory to my 2nd HD as root.
Not wanting my root password to be exposed, I have not put the cp routine
into a .sh file. Even though I changed the ownership of my directories on
the second HD from root to myself, it still gives me an error message that
only root can copy to the second HD when I attempt to do a copy as myself!

What have I missed in my efforts?

Thanks,
