Hello, when I want to read new mail I don't care where; in other mail
progs I have tried you click on a mail item (in the inbox) and its
content is displayed in a separate window. Not so in Kmail.

OK.
There is myriad options where mail can be incoming.
The 2 pane configuration is not really good option.
I guess that you got it by clicking on small x instead on big one.

Darrell and Jan already explained how to configure kmail layout.
The other option is to double click on the message.
That will open message in a new window.

Not to forget, if you want to read newsgroups in openSUSE you can use KNode.
