Two NICs, Two Networks

Maybe I bashing my head against a wall here, but I cannot figure out how
to do what I'm trying to do. I'm hoping that all the glorious geekiness
of this place can shed some light.
I have an openSUSE 10.2 box with two network cards installed. I need to
have the two cards working on two completely different networks --
different gateways, DNS servers, etc.
The only reason for the second NIC is so that I can use it for the
network interface for WinXP virtual machine that I have running under
the Linux box. (That sounds confusing -- Linux is the host OS.)
Is there a way to do this? Can two NICs exist totally autonomously of
each other?
Any instructions or suggestions or good links would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Russell
