Hi Guys,
Baron inscribed thus:
I will have a play with the BIOS on another machine using the old
drive on Monday. I don't want to spend any more time on this machine
whilst its working just fine with the new 80Gb drive.
FWIW I had a look on the Maxtor site and downloaded the "MaxBlast"
diagnostic software whilst I was there. The old drive is just about
five years old, so its well out of warranty!
Thanks for you input. I will report back my findings.

As promised, my findings.
The Maxtor disk testing software declares that "This drive is failing
and should be replaced.
I like the bit that says "A replacement can be obtained 24 hours a day
over the internet" !
The drive will not allow "fsck" to be run on it ! No idea why ! (No it
wasn't mounted"
A scandisk program shows that from about halfway to the end of the
drive as all bad blocks.
So my conclusion is that the drive has had something die ! My next
step is to dismantle the drive and physically examine it because D4G
suggests the the number of heads is wrong.
