Do you actually mean during start-up before you get to the login prompt
or so auto-starts when you login so it's there when you get to desktop?

For the first one, starting an application during system boot, create a
script that calls it and place it in /etc/boot.local, or make a copy of
/etc/init.d/skeleton, edit the copy to suit, and then use the runlevel
editor to start it at the appropriate point.

For the second one, this will depend on the desktop you use.

Assuming you're using KDE, open a window showing
"/home/$USER/.kde/Autostart". Next, you can either copy from the KDE
menu by using the control key while doing a drag-and-drop of the
application, or you can create a link to the application by using the
right-click menu "Create new -> Link to application" and filling in the
relevant data.

If you're using Gnome, or other desktop environments, there'll possibly
be a similar method that would work, but I don't know as I use either
KDE or a text console.
