Planning ahead for installing Linux (I bought the Suse Linux BibleNo, don't partition anything. Suse is quite intuitive about
book which includes Suse LInux 10.0) I just reformatted my hard
drive and am about to partition it with Acronis Director Suite and
have a question I
figure you folks will answer a heckuva lot better than the MS
types. ;-)
I already own Vista Premium Home edition but know it will not allow
me to use some of my PDA related software so I have to keep XP on my
system, hence
my decision to partition the hard drive. While this might sound
crazy, I
decided to use this time to also test Linux. If it will do what I
want, I'll be more than happy to say "Bye bye, buy bonds" to
Microsoft forever.
So, since I seem to think the Linux loader will ultimately control
everything, would my proper order be to partition the C into C and
D. I'll leave C basically with enough room to continue using the XP
and that's about
it. D will have the remainder of the hard drive...probably around
150-175
gigs. Would the Linux install then add the extra partitions it
needs from the D drive etc or should I go ahead and partition to C,
D and E and handle each totally separately?
partitioning the hard drive. Normally accepting the defaults it
gives
you will be adequate. If sharing files among the 3 operating systems
will be important to you, then you might consider altering the
recommended partitioning and take away from the "/" directory (which
is the root directory -- you will also be offered a small swap
partition and a separate "/home" partition where all your documents
and personal
settings go) and give that extra partition to a FAT32 one. While
Linux can read NTFS it cannot write to it reliably.
Are you saying I should install Linux next and THEN Vista? If so, I
assume during this installation process when the partitioning is about
to take place within the Linux setup, I'll be given a chance to add a
separate partition for Vista?
And since those companies haven't yet paid Microsoft's ransom or rather
extortion money, there are no native Vista drivers for them.
No, Windows always insists on being first. So install Vista then Linux.
Why anyone would want Vista is beyond me. It has barely been out a
month for end consumers and already I've come across 10 customers that
can't install various peripherals because the installation disks abort
as soon as they see Vista.
I don't really want it. I'm just staying on top of the game with MS in case
I can't make Linux do what I need it to do. At least for the short term, I
know for certain I'll need to retain XP. If Vista will do the MS things I
need, I can dumpXP, if not, I'll dump Vista and wait for it to become more
reliable. My major hope is that I can find the goodies I need to allow me
to do all I want and need within Linux as THAT would be far preferable and
then I can join the rising tide who have dumped MS altogether. In my case,
I have to be able to utilize my PDA as I've come to rely on it VERY much for
my day to day activities. I'm guessing I'll have to switch to a Palm to do
it and I don't mind that. As I've said, if I can dump MS, I'll do it in a
heartbeat.
Anyway, I'm rambling....thanks for the help with the beginning of the end
for MS on my system!! ;-)
I'm assuming, of course, that the Linux bootloader can and will
handle the triple boot just like it does the dual boot.
And probably 10, 20 or 30+ operating systems if you have the hard
drive
space for all of them. That includes other flavors of Linux too.
Thanks for any thoughts,
Tim
