Just for your information, when I enter
http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/
as an installation source, it tells me "Unknown source type"

It will do. The URL isn't quite right.

I entered it as:
http checked
download.opensuse.org server name
/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/ directory on server
^^^^^^^
Take off this bit and try again. YaST will search the directories on the
server for the RPMs to match your machines architecture.

Also, that is supposed to be a duplicate of what's on the DVD, which I
have a defined in sources as an ISO on my hard drive.

Not unless you have a DVD that contains around 10.6GB of data it
doesn't. The DVD contains non-OSS as well as OSS packages but, as a
single-sided dual layered disc is restricted to holding about 8.1GB,
that meant over 2GB of packages couldn't be included. Those that aren't
included you should find on the FTP site and the mirrors.

hexdump for openSUSE 10.2 is not available.

You didn't search very far did you?

I did find an rpm via Google and installed it.

You looked on Google but didn't look on the DVD you used to install
10.2?

Just, why is it not available with openSUSE?

But it is available on openSUSE 10.2.

It is also not available for my 32 bit system.

On my 10.2 system, I set aside a 10GB partition and copied the entire
contents of the DVD to it, and have it mounted as /suse. Here's some
info from my 10.2 system:

davjam@donnas:~> cat /etc/SuSE-release
openSUSE 10.2 (X86-64)
VERSION = 10.2
davjam@donnas:~> which hexdump
/usr/bin/hexdump
davjam@donnas:~> rpm -qf $(which hexdump)
util-linux-2.12r-61
davjam@donnas:~> ls -l /suse/suse/*/util-linux-2.12r-61*.rpm
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 1600911 2006-11-25 16:53 /suse/suse/i586/util-linux-2.12r-61.i586.rpm
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 1676465 2006-11-25 17:55 /suse/suse/x86_64/util-linux-2.12r-61.x86_64.rpm

So, it looks like it is in fact included in 10.2, in both the 32bit and
64bit versions.
