Certainly.. I know I can create the parameters to make this statement
very true (and anyone who manages computing infrastructures for Fortune
50 companies can tell you the same).
HOWEVER, the problem is the parameters. With Linux there really are
no boundaries. With Linux you don't HAVE to have a plethora of
separate servers and you don't have to avoid doing certain things
out of fear of a cascading platform license cost. You also don't
HAVE to use a Linux distribution with expensive annual renewal
contracts.
It's the Swiss Army Knife-like features of Linux that make it the
better value. Even if you choose the pricier Red Hat or Novell
support offerings... it's still a much better value.
I snipped the rest of the article... but Gartner's Dawson is
also correct in assuming that today's enterprise is a mixture
of platforms. It's just that several years ago, Linux has a
very small percentage of those enterprises. I'm pretty sure
you'll find Linux in every Fortune 1000 company now.
Which has a lower TCO? I can probably create a scenario where
a bank of workers using manual typewriters and morse code will
have the lowest TCO. :)
