On my SuSE 9.3 system, running Sendmail...

For the past couple of months... After logrotate rotates the mail logs,
Sendmail is supposed to write to the new /var/log/mail file. This
usually happens, but one time out of four, it keeps writing to the old
log file, now renamed.

When this bad behavior starts, it's hard to get Sendmail pointed to the
right log. /etc/init.d/sendmail stop and then start doesn't do it. In
desperation, last time, I rebooted. Not supposed to have to do this
with Linux!

9.3 install, a server configuration, no GUI.
Sendmail advertises itself as: 8.13.3/8.13.3/SuSE Linux 0.7

I haven't used sendmail, but:
Could sendmail have had the file open for write when the logrotate
occured? I suspect it may keep the file open for a time period after
the last use, and that would keep it writing to the same file.
Can you shut sendmail down and then do the rotate?
Or shut sendmail down and bring it back up with new log files?

If not, what happens if you reboot?

Thanks, John, for the reply.

I've tried:
#/etc/init.d/sendmail stop

#/etc/init.d/sendmail start

...and sendmail continues to write to the wrong log file.

I've been able to clear the problem by rebooting. Why is that
different from stoping and starting Sendmail? I don't know.

This problem is new... with one of the updates (automatic via YOU) in
the past couple of months.
