SUSE 10.2 + Network Manager

Running 10.2 on my Toshiba Laptop - happy to now be in the position to ditch
Windows for good!
I'm running a Belkin F5D7010 (Broadcom Chipset variety) network card.
I found a really good how-to guide, and *finally* have got the OS I want to
work with the wireless card I have, with WPA, hence the end of Windows.
However.... every 3rd boot (or so), the network manager applet fails to
appear on the task bar, and an ifconfig command shows me that an IP address
has not been allocated. This only happens with a wireless connection, not
wired. I have looked again at the appropriate settings via Yast,
specifically options like start on boot, start on connection, start on
hotplug, etc, etc.
As a bit of a noob, is anyone able to point me in the right direction to
troubleshoot this? Its so frustrating to be so near the setup I have wanted
to have, but I end up having to restart 2 or 3 times before the wireless
works.
Thanks,
Rob.
