openSuse 10.2
I installed 10.2 onto two machines: one at home, and
one at work:
New installs from DVD with format (over SUSE PRO 9.3).
At home, I could not get the openSUSE-updater applet
to work correctly until I removed "zmd" and friends
as described here:
http://opensuse-community.org/Package_Sources
Now it works fine at home.
At work, I could not get either 'zmd' or openSUSE-updater
to work.
Our network has an internet proxy. The proxy is setup
correctly via YaST/Network Services/Proxy.
YaST/Online Update works correctly through the proxy;
and I've used it (YOU) to download/install several patches.
However, neither 'zmd' nor openSUSE-updater work.
I removed "zmd" and friends as I had done at home, but
openSUSE-updater still doesn't work; it gives "connect"
and/or 'parse' error messages.
Is openSUSE-updater having issues because of the
internet proxy?
Any comments or suggestions?
I have proxy problems at work too. what I normally do is open a web page
in firefox using the proxy setting in firefox. Once that connection is
going then I use the updater and it sort of follows the firefox
connection right on out the gateway. Maybe that'll work for you too.

Wow, I can't fathom how FF could affect the updater, but I'll
try it tomorrow & get back to you...
For reasons too complex to go into now, I tried to remove
Firefox using YAST. There are a huge number of programs
YAST claims will be broken if I do that.
Why did they do that? Firefox seems to be more integrated
into the system than IE was in Windows. NOTHING should break
if Firefox is removed. The default browser should be Konqueror
or whatever the equivalent is in other window managers, dependint
on what is installed.
