For example, Firefox has been integrated into the KDE
so that you can't remove it without removing KDE as
well. There was no reason to do that. Open Office
is also somehow *integrated* into the system so you
can't remove that either.
You _can_ remove Open Office and still have KDE or Gnome as your
desktop, just as I have on my 10.2 system. To do so does require a
little effort on your part but, if you're really intent on not having
Office installed, it can be done.
For 10.2, when performing a fresh install, select either KDE or Gnome,
do through to the package selections and click the details button. Then,
for each of the packages that have the checkbox marked with a tick and a
black triangle, click them again so it becomes just a tick. After that,
you can deselect the open office packages and it doesn't matter if the
KDE or Gnome patterns are removed.
Alternatively, you can deselect the open office packages after
installation, and just tell YaST to ignore the "broken dependencies" for
the KDE or Gnome patterns.

There are a number of other issues as well, many detailed
here. So I'd stick with 10.0 (and have, on two other
machines) and hope that 10.3 is better. If it isn't...
Well, so far from what I can see, 10.3 is a lot better at package
selections. There wasn't the slightest peep out of it when I installed
alpha3, with KDE and no open office. It didn't even complain about me
deselecting kerry, and all the beagle stuff, either.
