I do it BECAUSE I am lazy. it saves me much time when I want to restore
things. As always, restore is the most important part of a backup.

As I explained more then once, I just use StoreBackup and when I need
something from a backup from my home directory, I just do (e.g.)
cp ~/backup/.bashrc ~/.bashrc

As you can see only the /backup part is added. Naturaly I can do that
using a GUI file browser as well.

As for your Ubuntu installation. Why not just install it (or any other
distribution), add the user (see that you have the same userID) and then
just mount /home. No need to copy anything.
