Re: Two day experiment

From this brief digression into a new operating system, I can draw
several premature conclusions:
1. Ubuntu is far easier to install than SuSE.
2. Their philosophy seems geared toward making the transition easy for
people accustomed to using Windows.
3. Applications do seem to load faster than with SuSE, probably
because of less overhead in the coding.

If I had to use one system, I could live comfortably with either one.
Others have succeeded in creating seamless multiple boot systems,
so in this regard I blame no one other than myself.

But, for now I remain a SuSE user. ;-)

I have installed Ubuntu on my laptop. It was a dual boot
system with Windows XP. The install was easy, though it
insisted on booting me into Gnome. I prefer what is called
"runlevel 3" in SUSE. I'll sort that later.

The boot menu created included Windows as the last choice.
I found no way to change that other than to go into the
grub boot menu manually.

All in all I agree with what you wrote. Updating is *much*
easier.

And oh yes, my wireless card works with Ubuntu. Right out
of the box. It does not now and never has worked with SUSE.
Bummer.

My conclusion is that distributions can learn from each other.
Clearly Ubuntu seeks to be easy to install for the novice (i.e.
Windows) user. I applaud them for that since gaining Linux
supporters is far more important than the distribution used.

If you want a more sophisticated setup however, Suse beats
Ubuntu, at least in my opinion. I'm going to try their server
install one of these days and see how that flies.
