I have installed Ubuntu on my laptop. It was a dual boot
system with Windows XP. The install was easy, though it
insisted on booting me into Gnome. I prefer what is called
"runlevel 3" in SUSE. I'll sort that later.
Run level 3 is, I thought, the standard for that.
My quick reading of their documentation seems to show that
they use a different scheme. Yes, I was surprised too.
My conclusion is that distributions can learn from each other.
yes.
Clearly Ubuntu seeks to be easy to install for the novice (i.e.
Windows) user. I applaud them for that since gaining Linux
supporters is far more important than the distribution used.
No. I am at least not in to gain Windows users, or against Windows. I am
also not interested in gaining as much supporters as possible. Yes, I
know all the advantages about having more users.
I know. My desires are different.
However, what the 'easy' distributions try to do is to be a Windows. No
matter how bad Windows is, you can NEVER be as good as Windows, because
you are still imitating.
Also I hate it when people compare it in the wrong way. First they take
a pre-installed sytem, next they compare it with an uninstalled system.
I agree. I've said that too.
Let me put together a box and I will give you a pre-installed system.
Then I give you a XP CD and ask a newbie to install Windows, obviously
with Office applications, firewall configured, proxy server installed,
anti-virus software installed. DVD-player installed. MP3 player
installed. Some 50 games installed and then come back and ask him what
was easier. The pre-installed Linux, or the un-installed Windows.
As long as there is no pre-installed Linux for sale on a serious scale,
it ain't going to happen. And that will keep on happening, even f the
majority of people would be running Linux.
