Some being by the name of Pat Kelecy managed to piece togther the following:
I have a 64-bit application (an FEA code) that I need to run for my
business which is going to require me to switch to a different OS (from
Windows XP
Pro). I would like to give openSuSE 10.2 a try for this. I have a few
questions though on how best to set this up. I hope someone can help.
1. The way this application is used is that I set up a model or "problem"
and then solve it. The solution process can take up to several hours, or
more, to complete, and I would like to be able to do other things during
this time. A couple of the applications I use actually have Linux
versions available (e.g. Openoffice, Firefox), so using these would not be
a problem. But there are some, such as Outlook and MS Project, that
unfortunately are
going to keep me tied to Windows a little while longer. So in setting
this up I think a dual boot won't work, at least if I want to run a
Windows app
during the FEA, which leaves a virtualization approach. I know VMware has
a product that's suppose to be good, but it's a bit expensive and may be
overkill for my purposes. Are there other options that would be good for
this? Any that come with SuSE?
VMWare server is free from Vmwares website.
2. In setting up the virtualization, I assume I'll want to virtualize
Windows XP using openSuSE as the host, and not the other way around - is
that right? If so, how would all my existing Windows files, applications,
profiles, etc. get moved over to the virtualized environment? Would it
essentially be like setting up a new PC?
Can use it either way, Linux ost or Linux host. Doesn't XP come with some
migration tools? If not you'd need to image your XP installation and then
create a new virtual machine with it. My preference is always to use Linux
for the host. I need Windows for work quite sadly, so I use a virtual
machine booting XP on my Linux laptop. FInd it runs better o Linux as the
host. I did once try it with WIndows as the host O/s but ran into resource
issues.
3. Can SuSE view, copy or move windows files (NTFS file system)? Can
Windows do similar with SuSE files?
Yes Linux can access NTFS for read only, rw is experimental, with no
problems. Windows cannot read commonly used Linux partitions without other
software, but it is available. You could also use SMB shares to achieve
that.
4. Can, say, Openoffice files that were created in a Windows environment
be
opened by Openoffice in a SuSE environment (and vice versa)? If so, is it
possible to set things up so the same files are opened regardless of which
OS I'm using? That would avoid having to track file versions, etc.
Yes, use an SMB share one way or the other, and mount/attach that shared
directory.
5. Are there any good openSuSE reference books for the newbie? I played
around with openSuSE 10.2 via the LiveDVD a few weeks ago, and although I
was impressed with the interface, it is difference enough from Windows
that I would like to spend a little time training myself on it before
trying to use for any serious work.
A good place to start would be http://www.opensuse.org
I think this covers most of the questions I had. I realize most of
these
are pretty basic (and hopefully easy to answer). I mainly want to make
sure I'm heading in the right direction, and that everything will work in
a reasonably convenient manner once it's all set up.
Thanks for any advice or recommendations. I greatly appreciate it.
