KDE & search engines

Just my opinion but I feel this is important. It seems that the kde
developers and/or openSuSE developers have decided that 'we' need desktop
search capabilities and offer no alternative that is reasonable. Too many
applications 'require' the installation of beagle + associated files as
well as, in the case of kde4, strigi and related files. Now I don't oppose
installing these IF a person chooses to. But if, like me, you do not like
searches and search indexing occurring in the background storing data in
some place that others 'might' gain access to for no purpose I require,
then we need to point this out. Too many applications are now requiring
these dependencies and it looks like this will only get worse with kde4..

Perhaps the few applications that need to index information can simply use a
subset of these search engines and not require beagle/strigi to be
installed and running... So perhaps something like a music player can
index your music collections using the search functions from the libraries
for beagle/strigi without the full on beagle/strigi installation...

Every time I want to do an update of software in Yast (or nearly every time)
I'm informed that I also need to install beagle, libbeagle and several
others. I have to mark as taboo all beagle items BEFORE I accept my
selections for update...Yast doesn't even tell me which application(s)
require beagle, etc... Perhaps I'd uninstall this package(s) that require
beagle if I new which one it was. But probably not. This usually causes
even more deleting of packages and in short dependency hell.

Today I decided to reactivate my kde4 installation source and see what kde4
is looking like. But there are WAY too many applications that require
strigi... Another search index that I don't want !!!

If, like me, you keep your system well organized, you do not need a desktop
search engine. Locate works fine for me. I think this desktop search idea
is just another lousy Microsoft mentality thing and it should not be
required by an ever larger number of packages...

Sorry for venting my frustration but this situation only seems to be getting
worse...

Comments and thoughts are welcome.
