How do items get into the menu when the hardware and the software does
not exist? These will do an hourglass in the tray and then exit, so
something (Kmenu?) is looking for something (non-existing).

The package exist in.....part of package alsa-tools-gui. If you launch
envy24control from a terminal you will see that the package doesn;t run
unless you have a 'ICE1712' card... So launching from the menu will fail
as well. Unless you do have one of these cards...
If a menu item doesn't work use the menu editor to find out what program is
launched and try launching from a terminal.. This will often help diagnose
launch failure.
