Re: OpenSuse vs Kubuntu

Hi,

I started using Kubuntu a few months ago, this was also my first Linux
experience.
In general, things work ok, but I've run into some issues that don't seem to
get resolved (mainly HW support)
- No sound in tvtime and mythtv
- Use of midi on the USB port (midi connectivity to a Roland synthesiser)
- no support for a canon scanner 4200F
(this seems to be a general Linux thing of Canon not supporting Linux)

Can anyone tell me if these issues are better supported in OpenSuse ?

You ask some questions depending on very specific details. It is
probably missing hardware support but can also be problems with
configration.

As for the Canon scanner 4200F, unfortunately there is yet no solution.
Afaik not on any distribution, nor by independent public development.

and what is the main difference between OpenSuse and Kubuntu

The main difference: (open)SUSE has every advantage of being a renomated
distribution what the just starting Ubuntu family does not have.

It is a renomated distribution by over 15 years of development, support
and a large stable worldwide user-base and years of experience. Due to
this it has an excellent experienced core team of developers,
professional security team and support. The team already had years of
experience with working with the community and this has recently made
stronger by professionaly intergrating the community in the development
and support.

Compared, all Ubuntu relatives (as independent distributions) are just
starting in the Linux world. Popularity is mainly due to marketing, wide
multiplicity in distributions with aggresive promotional activity to
attract as many users as possible in a short time. Due to this it mainly
attracts new unexperienced users and users interested in following the
crowd. However the company behind the family remains invisible and is
not very open in communicating. To me, Ubuntu is still a hype. Works
well for the user base it targets, but it's world is far from that of
the renomated distributions like (open)SUSE.

But this is just my word. To find out the main difference for you, I
recomend you to try it out. Not just the distribution, but (open)SUSE as
a distribution and everything that surrounds it.
