openSUSE does only security updates. If you want a newer version, you
either add the repo where that newer version is, or download the rpm and
install it.
That will also mean the end of security updates.

What software do you need a newer version of and why?

Well, I'm primarily thinking of updates, since these normally contain
bug fixes and security improvements that make an application more
stable. Having said that, I would also like to at least know if a new
version (or major release) of an application I'm using is available,
since these normally include new or improved features that I might
benefit from. That's especially true if the application has features (or
behaviors) I find annoying (or missing features) that I think might get
fixed.
