What's the difference between using "Online Update" vs "System Update" for
updating my system? I ask because if I use Online Update it says there
are no available updates, while System Update comes back with a list of
things to update (mostly packages).
Online updates does the security updates. That is the one you should be
using. Yes, it is very likely that there are no updates available
anymore

System update is to update your system to whatever you are already
running. Don't use it, unless you know what it does. I hope they
filenaly find a more apropriate name for it for 10.3
Thanks. Sounds like good advice.

So if I want to check for updates (or new releases) for installed
packages, what should I use? The normal Software Management in Yast?

# zypper lu

That command (list updates) will show you all updates, security
ones and newer versions of any installed software available at
your installation sources.

# zypper up

That command will install the security updates.

# zypper up -t --package

That will update your installed software to newer versions
available in your installation sources.

man zypper

That will tell you the rest of zypper.

Thanks for the info. Doing things via the command line seems very
efficient (and probably a lot more flexible) if you know the right
commands. It's a little more intimidating for the newbie though (I
always feel like I'm more likely to mess something up compared to going
through the gui) although that probably just due to lack of experience.
I guess this is my chance to get some.

Thanks again. -Pat
