On VMware 6 can't boot Windows 98 VM

After I installed Workstation version 6.0.0 build-45731, I get the following message when trying to boot Windows 98 virtual machines:
"While initializing device VMCPD
Windows Protection Error. You will need to reboot your computer. Press any key...."

This occurs with machines I created under Workstation version 5.5 and also when trying to install Win98 on Workstation 6.0.

I am running SuSE version 9.3. with recent kernel.

How can I fix this problem?
.
