Moving a folder to the top of a list

This is a minor issue, but in Windows I could add a special character
prefix (usually "@" or ":") to a folder name (or file name, for that
matter) and it move that folder to the top of the window (in icon view)
or list (in list view) when viewed in window with other folders. That
was very handy in cases where you needed to access a particular folder a
lot (like a project folder, where the current "hot" project is moved to
the top of the list).

In Linux that trick doesn't appear to work (at least not with "@" or
":"). Are there any Linux counterparts to the "@" or ":" character that
would have the same effect (and is not alphanumeric)?

Thanks, -Pat
.
